HPBooks began as part of a purchase of Price Stern Sloan. Price Stern Sloan originated in Tucson, Arizona. Price Stern Sloan started publishing nonfiction books in a variety of categories such as: cooking, automotive, photography, gardening, health and child care. Now, HPBooks specializes in cooking and automotive books. HPBooks usually publishes about a dozen books a year. One of the most famous on their list, Mable Hoffman's Crockery Cookery, just celebrated twenty years in print in addition to having more than five million copies sold. John Duff Publisher, Vice-President and Senior Editor John Duff, Publisher of the trade paperback imprints Perigee, HPBooks, and Avery, is also a Vice-President and Senior Editor for G. P. Putnam's Sons. He came to the U.S. from Canada with Doubleday. At Doubleday, he was Director of Special Interest Publishing until 1992, when he joined The Putnam Berkley Group. Michael Lutfy has been Editorial Director of HPBooks since 1988. HPBooks was founded in 1964 and is one of the top publishers of performance, restoration and racing for the automotive aficionado. Previous to HPBooks, he worked as editor of All Chevy and Popular Cars magazines. Michael Lutfy has written more than 250 automotive articles for Road & Track, Hot Rod, Car Craft, Truckin', Sport Truck plus other automotive publications. HPBooks has been the leading how-to publisher for automotive devotees for over 30 years.
